Well, that is a long story about NGO´s, commercial companies and indigenous people coming together and developing an Ecobased Management System and ensuring the most stringent guidelines for sustainable forest management by a FSC certification.
These areas are being managed by companies such as Iisaak Forest Resources. Companies owned and run by the indigenous people of this area. This way the forest certification provides livelihood for the native people for future generations.
As they write themselves “Iisaak Forest Resources Ltd. is an innovative ecologically sensitive forest management company. The wood we produce is of the utmost quality, harvested to the strict guidelines set out by the Clayoquot Sound Science Panel within the Nuu-chah-nulth traditional territories”
For more information see

Management of such vulnerable and complex forest and watersheds as found within the Clayoquot Sound area requires
high tech, mapping and planning and forest practice.

The logging and extraction is carried out with a surgeon’s precision to ensure minimal damage and to leave the forest as intact as possible. This is done based on the mapping and planning and on using specialized equipment such as helicopters.

Logging in old growth forest is a hot topic and there are many strong opinions on it. Check out for instance the youtube clips on the newly released Vancouver produced movie The Green Chain:

We are not going to say who is right. But everybody has the right to have an opinion.
This is our opinion:
Forests are providers of a lot more than timber, such as clean air, water, livelihood for people and an enormous diversity of life and biology and therefore MUST be protected.
At the same time pressure on the world’s natural resources is increasing everyday. Finally timber is by far the most environmental and climate friendly building material, and simply beautiful.
For us it is not a question of whether forest are being used or not but on HOW we use them !
TRACER is in the wood business. For us the answer is to do things right. It’s the FSC certification that makes all the difference.
